“Thank you very much and welcome to this UNEA six opening. We, of course, this is the world's high-level, highest-level decision-making body on the Environment. UNEA, as you know, meets every two years. It sets the global environmental agenda. It provides overarching policy guidance that defines policy responses to address emerging environmental challenges. Ladies and gentlemen. You need to remember that UNEA and UNEA six is both a forum and a decision-making body on everything related to the environment.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Inger Andersen, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP):
“Fundamentally, we're very much hoping and asking all present here that the Nairobi spirit, which is something we are quite proud of, the spirit of compromise, the spirit of finding together, the spirit of understanding that politics cannot really enter into the matter. Because if I have climate change, you have climate change. If my air is dirty probably your end is dirty. My plastic waste becomes your plastic waste. We are on this planet together, which is why multilateralism is so critical and which is why we hope that division and centrifugal forces that may be a place in the political realm will not show up here, but rather that we will take with us the notion of the one planet and of the inter-generational dimension.”

Storyline

The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) started today (26 Feb) at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

As the world’s top decision-making body on the environment, UNEA aims to help restore harmony between humanity and nature, improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.

UNEA-6 will focus on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

Backed by strong science, political resolve, and engagement with society, the Assembly will be an opportunity for world governments, civil society groups, the scientific community, and the private sector to shape global environmental policy.

As the planet’s only universal membership forum for the environment, UNEA provides a unique platform for courageous decisions and new ideas to chart a bold plan of collective environmental action.

In so doing, UNEA-6 will support the achievement of the sustainable development goals.

UNEA-6 was preceded by a meeting of the Open-ended Committee of Permanent Representatives, 19-23 February 2024, which helped lay the groundwork for the Assembly.
