“Without accelerated action, children born in the year 2020 could experience up to seven times more extreme weather events like scorching heatwaves during their lifetimes compared to their grandparents. This new Weather Kids campaign is part of our response to listen, and act upon the growing concerns of young people across the world for their rights – and their futures.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassie Flynn, UNDP Global Director of Climate Change:
“Well, the stakes couldn't be higher. 2023 is already the hottest year on record. And we're seeing these impacts be more widespread and devastating than ever before. Everyone on the planet is experiencing extreme heat, floods, wildfires. It's really terrifying, and progress is possible. We're seeing people, governments, communities around the world start to take bold climate action. And we know we need to do more. Every government in the world has to put forward a national pledge under the Paris Agreement. They are getting stronger, but we need them to be even more stronger. And this is where people come in. They have to urge their leaders to take bold climate action.”

RECENT – GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Cassie Flynn, UNDP Global Director of Climate Change:
“If you're a kid today, you're ten years old. By the time you get to 2050, you're in your mid-thirties. And the way the climate has changed will affect the food you eat, the jobs you have, it will affect your ability to travel around the world. It will affect everything. And so it's really important that adults today are keeping that in mind.”

Storyline

Weather Kids, the joint global action campaign of UNDP and WMO, in collaboration with UNICEF, launches on March 21, leading up to World Meteorological Day.

Broadcasters and online platforms across the globe will air a different type of weather forecast, presented by children and showing a projected forecast for 2050, if we do not take climate action.

The campaign directs to www.weatherkids.org (to go live March 21), and asks people to take a pledge for climate action in the name of a child and learn more about the many ways we can act today for future generations.
