Storyline

Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas of Greece met with Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon at UN headquarters today to discuss a variety of issues including: the latest developments in North Africa and the Middle East, the name dispute with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and the Cyprus issue ahead of Ban’s submission of his report to the UN Security Council later this month.

Later, he told journalists that on the issue of the name dispute with FYROM, he reiterated once again to the Secretary-General the willingness and the political will of the Greek government to see a settlement “the sooner the better.”

On the latest talks in Geneva regarding Cyprus, he said that he was not happy that the Turkish Cypriot community and its leadership were not responding in the same forthcoming and constructive manner to the proposals put forward by President Christofias.

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders have met 90 times under UN sponsorship since 2008, apart from additional meetings between their representatives. The UN has maintained a peacekeeping mission on the island since the 1964 violence.
