"Les violences sexuelles continuent à sévir partout dans le pays, on a eu jusqu'à maintenant 70 cas de rapportés à l'UNICEF évidemment se ne sont que les cas qui sont rapportés, le chiffre réel est probablement entre 5 et 10 fois plus élevé que ces cas qui sont rapportés si on tient compte des cas non rapportés."

"We believe that this last week in Cote d’Ivoire has been the most violent since the post election crisis- we’re highly concerned about this and the impact it’s having on civilians. On Wednesday morning large numbers of internally displaced people could be seen in various parts of the city and we’re trying our best. We’re getting desperate calls from the generous people hosting them but most food and supplies have run out.”

“It is hard to avoid the conclusion that this is an international crime, quite possibly a crime against humanity and we are very concerned about the situation in Côte d’Ivoire in general which seems to be deteriorating yet further.”

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed grave concern about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Cote d’Ivoire.
At a press conference in Geneva today (18 Mar), OHCHR’s spokesperson Rupert Colville called recent events in Cote d'Ivoire an “international crime, quite possibly a crime against humanity” adding that “we are very concerned about the situation in Côte d’Ivoire in general which seems to be deteriorating yet further.”
UNHCR reported escalating violence in the country, which has led to continuing population displacement. Fighting this week in the country's commercial centre, Abidjan, has been at its worst level since the political crisis began after the presidential election in November.
Households hosting internationally displaced persons (IDPs) are seeing their resources being depleted. UNHCR staff is starting to receive desperate phone calls for help from both these host families and internally displaced people.
