United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Bulgaria today (5 May) and met with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to discuss climate change, nuclear safety, disaster risk reduction and the fight against corruption.

At a press conference following his meeting with Borisov in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, Ban told journalists “Bulgaria is moving from a recipient of UN development assistance to a donor” adding that it is “now also sharing your experiences and lessons in democratic transition with the people of the Middle East and North Africa.”

He noted the country’s efforts to promote greater regional cooperation and global security. Today, more than 600 Bulgarians are stationed in Afghanistan.

Ban also met with Sofia’s mayor Yordanka Fandakova and Tsetska Tsacheva, the Chair of the country’s National Assembly. His visit to the Eastern European nation will continue tomorrow.
