“An assessment of mortality in one of four refugee camps at the Dollo Ado complex in Ethiopia has found that death rates have reached alarming levels. Since the Kobe refugee camp opened in June, an average of 10 children under the age of five have died every day. An outbreak of suspected measles, combined with high rates of acute malnutrition, is thought to be the major cause of death.”

The deadly combination of measles and acute malnutrition is said to be responsible for an average of ten deaths per day of children under the age of five at Dolla Ado refugee complex in south east Ethiopia.
The Kobe camp, in the Dollo Ado complex, has a population of 25,000. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) began a mass vaccination campaign against measles at the camp yesterday (15 Aug) targeting all children between the ages of six months and 15 years. The vaccination campaign will continue in other camps in the coming days.

Last month, UNHCR reported that refugee camps like Dolla Ado are struggling to keep up with the new arrivals from Somalia. The numbers are alarming and almost overwhelming for aid agencies including UNHCR.
While Somalia is the worst affected country, neighbouring Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti are also suffering. More than 12 million people across the Horn of Africa now face severe food shortages and require international assistance.
