“Its 57 members of OIC condemn all such acts of aggression and incitement, which constitute a direct provocation of Muslim world. “It is not us, it is the Israeli side, who sent settlers protected by the Israeli Army to our Holy places in clear provocation to our people and to our community. Therefore, the international community is reacting to these things that the Israeli side is doing and perhaps the Israeli side is doing that because they are looking for ways to sabotage the effort of Secretary of State Kerry and others in trying to see possibly a success of this process.”

Storyline

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned today (5 Mar) the attempt of the Israeli Parliament to enact laws aiming at imposing Israeli sovereignty over the holy Islamic sites in Jerusalem.

Speaking to reporters outside the Security Council, ambassador Mamadi Toure of Guinea, who chairs the OIC, said that its 57 members “condemn all such acts of aggression and incitement, which constitute a direct provocation of Muslim world.”

He added “we believe that the continuation of Israeli violations will only further destabilize and deepen the suffering of the Palestinian people as well as undermine the current peace process.”

Also speaking to reporters, the Palestinian ambassador Ryiad Mansour said “we are grateful for the actions taken by these groups, the Arab group, the OIC group, -the Islamic group-, and the Palestine Committee of the United Nations.”

He added “these three groups met, deliberated, discussed based on instructions from their capitals or their headquarters and adopted positions reflected in letters that have been sent to the president of the Security Council, to the Secretary-General and to the president of the General Assembly. Three separated letters from the Arab group, from the OIC and from the Palestine Committee.”

Mansour also said “it is not us, it is the Israeli side, who sent settlers protected by the Israeli Army to our Holy places in clear provocation to our people and to our community. Therefore, the international community is reacting to these things that the Israeli side is doing and perhaps the Israeli side is doing that because they are looking for ways to sabotage the effort of Secretary of State Kerry and others in trying to see possibly a success of this process.”

In a press released also today, a United Nations committee on Palestinian rights called on the Security Council to act quickly to address “alarming” developments in East Jerusalem, including increasing incursions by Israeli extremists and political leaders on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The Bureau of the General Assembly’s Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, in a statement issued in New York, said such incidents provoke Palestinian and other Muslim worshipers and often lead to clashes, in which Palestinian civilians are injured, tear-gassed and detained.

The Committee added that these recent actions are indicative of a strategy aimed at altering the legal, demographic, physical and cultural character of East Jerusalem. “Such actions are clearly prohibited under international law. House demolitions, evictions, land expropriation and the revocation of residency rights of Palestinian Jerusalemites are also on the increase.”

In 2013, 565 structures were demolished in East Jerusalem, displacing 298 Palestinians, including many women and children, according to the statement, which also noted that Palestinians are permitted to build in only 14 per cent of East Jerusalem, and a third of Palestinian land in East Jerusalem has been expropriated since 1967. In the same period, Israel has revoked the residency status of more than 14,000 Palestinians.

The Committee stated that Israel also continues to construct settlements in East Jerusalem in violation of international law and in defiance of the international community’s repeated calls for ending such illegal acts.
