3. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“The horrific events of yesterday demonstrate that unfortunately war crimes are going on in Syria, that international humanitarian law remains being violated frequently. The Security Council will meet today, we have been asking for accountability in relation to the crimes that are committed and I'm confident the Security Council will live up to its responsibilities. At the same time, these events only prove how important this conference is, how important it is to bring together the international community, to be able to put pressure on the parties of the conflict and on the countries that have influence on the conflict, to put aside their differences and understand that there is a fundamental need to put an end to this horrific war.”

Speaking at a major international conference on Syria, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today (5 Apr) said “the horrific events of yesterday demonstrate that unfortunately war crimes are going on in Syria, that international humanitarian law remains being violated frequently.”
Guterres, standing beside the European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, said “these events only prove how important this conference is, how important it is to bring together the international community, to be able to put pressure on the parties of the conflict and on the countries that have influence on the conflict, to put aside their differences and understand that there is a fundamental need to put an end to this horrific war.”
The two-day Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region started yesterday with thematic sessions on the humanitarian needs and challenges within the country and on ways to strengthen resilience of refugees and host communities in the context of the crisis.
The World Health Organization today said that at least 70 people have died and hundreds more have been affected in Khan Shaykhun. Doctors in Idleb are reporting that dozens of patients suffering from breathing difficulties and suffocation have been admitted to hospitals in the governorate for urgent medical attention, many of them women and children. The likelihood of exposure to a chemical attack is amplified by an apparent lack of external injuries reported in cases showing a rapid onset of similar symptoms, including acute respiratory distress as the main cause of death. Some cases appear to show additional signs consistent with exposure to organophosphorus chemicals, a category of chemicals that includes nerve agents.
In its seventh year, the conflict in Syria remains the largest humanitarian challenge in the world – with 13.5 million men, women and children inside Syria in need of urgent assistance. There are now more than 5 million Syrian refugees living in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, and many more have made the dangerous journey to Europe and farther afield.
