“The humanitarian and social impact of conflicts in the Middle East is catastrophic. In Syria, hundreds of thousands have been killed since 2011 and approximately half of the population is displaced. Over five million Syrians refugees are registered with the UNHCR, with nearly three million in Turkey, over one million in Lebanon, and more that 650,000 in Jordan, putting a huge socio-economic and security strain on these societies. In Iraq, over 334,000 people are currently displaced in total as a result of fighting in Mosul. Let me note that most of them are people who have lived for two years under the barbaric rule of ISIL.”

“The question of Palestine remains potent symbol a rallying cry that is easily misappropriated and exploited by extremist groups. “Iran and Hezbollah conspired together to destabilize the Middle East and their actions are expanding. For decades they have committed terrorist acts across the region. Today they prop up Bashar A-Assad’s brutality, fighting along his forces, adding to the killing of thousands of civilians and the misery millions of refugees. They train deadly militias in Iraq, and arm Houthis militants in Yemen. While this Council has paid too little attention to this growing menace, the United States will not.
The Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, told the Security Council today (20 Apr) that “the humanitarian and social impact of conflicts in the Middle East is catastrophic.”
Addressing the Council’s monthly meeting on the the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, Mladenov said that in Syria, “hundreds of thousands have been killed since 2011 and approximately half of the population is displaced,” including three million refugees in Turkey, over one million in Lebanon, and more that 650,000 in Jordan.
In Iraq, he said “over 334,000 people are currently displaced in total as a result of fighting in Mosul” and pointed out that “most of them are people who have lived for two years under the barbaric rule of ISIL.”
Mladenov stressed that the question of Palestine “remains potent symbol a rallying cry that is easily misappropriated and exploited by extremist groups,” adding that “ending the occupation and realizing a two-state solution will not solve all of the region’s problems but as long as the conflict persists, it will continue to feed them.”
Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour called for full respect of resolution 2334, which he stressed is “not anti-Israel.” He said the resolution, adopted by the Council last year “is anti-settlements, anti-violence, anti-violation of international law, and is thus actually and clearly pro-peace and pro-two-states solution - Palestine and Israel.”
For his part, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said “I ask a simple question to those who insist on keeping the focus on Israel here in the Security Council: Is Israel at fault for the spread of ISIS? United States Ambassador Nikki Haley argued that the Council’s focus should not be on the Palestinian question, but instead on the broader Middle East issues.
