Storyline

In a joint statement issued today (26 Apr), two UN humanitarian coordinators for Syria said the “appalling” damage and destruction of medical facilities in northern Syria was “depriving hundreds of thousands of people of basic health services.”

Speaking to reporters in New York, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the Shahid Wasim Husseini hospital in Kafr Takharim was reportedly put out of service after being hit by airstrikes yesterday. He added that airstrikes in the area of Abdin in Idleb Governorate on Saturday reportedly hit an underground field hospital killing four civilians while four other airstrikes impacting medical facilities were reported in April alone in the country.

Dujarric reported Ali al-Za’atari and Kevin Kennedy’s call for the parties to the conflict to “abide by their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure such as hospitals.”

Al-Za’atari was appointed as the Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria in October 2016 and Kevin Kennedy is the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syrian Crisis.
