Let us not be distracted from our goal, finding a mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict which will provide for self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”
4. Wide shot, Security Council
The Security Council today (28 Apr) unanimously adopted a draft resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for another year.
Michele Sison, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States, which sponsored the resolution, told the Council that MINURSO “must be part of a broader effort to achieve a mutually acceptable resolution of the conflict in Western Sahara.”
Returning to negotiations, she said, “will of course be a difficult task, but the United States is committed to doing what we can to facilitate the UN’s work.”
She urged Council members to “not be distracted from our goal, finding a mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict which will provide for self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”
The vote was initially scheduled for Thursday, but was postponed to allow time for efforts to resolve the situation in Al-Guergarat, where Polisario Forces remained in violation of the ceasefire agreement.
