Storyline

On an official visit to the Central African Republic (CAR), UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, presided over a memorial ceremony in tribute to the five peacekeepers killed on Monday evening in the east of the country when their convoy was attacked by anti-balaka militia.

Lacroix then met with the country's leaders to express his support for the UN peacekeeping mission.

Lacroix said “our colleagues here do a formidable work, sometimes in very difficult and perilous conditions, but I can tell you that their commitment, their engagement in support of the central African people is absolute and will remain so. And I should ad of course that the murders which where committed should not be unpunished and MINUSCA will do everything it can, together with the African authorities to achieve that.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council strongly condemned Monday's attack and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.
