Storyline

The police used tear gas to disperse protestors in Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), resulting in 19 wounded and 16 arrested protestors.

The secular committee of Catholic Coordination called for a peaceful march on Sunday, (21 Jan) to demand the departure of the DRC’s president Joseph Kabila from power.

The protest was banned by the local government.

The police used tear gas to disperse the protestors who were joint by activists of the citizen movement “fight for change” - “La Lucha” , who joined the march.

The police have been deployed in large numbers in all the Catholic parishes and the hottest neighborhoods of the city of Goma, in hours before the protest.

Reportedly, 19 people were wounded and 16 arrested during the manifestation in Goma.

The United Nations mission in DRC known as MONUSCO, reported that on Sunday, six people were killed in capital Kinshasa and 63 injured nationwide as government forces cracked down on the protests against the president Kabila.
