“I want to recognize the vital political and humanitarian role of Egypt. All Arish Airport and the Rafah crossing are essential arteries for lifesaving aid. into Gaza. But those arteries are clogged . On one side of the border there are blocked humanitarian trucks as far as the eye can see , on the other, we have a real time humanitarian catastrophe stretching even further. Looking at Gaza, it almost appears that the four horsemen of war, famine, conquest and death are galloping across it. And that is why the time for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire is now. Storyline

On the second day in Egypt for his annual Ramadan solidarity trip, Secretary-General António Guterres today (24 Mar) said, "it almost appears that the four horsemen of war, famine, conquest and death are galloping across” Gaza, and once again called for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

Guterres started the day meeting with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and later in New Gaza City with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

Talking to reporters after bilateral discussions, Guterres recognized “the vital political and humanitarian role of Egypt,” and highlighted the role of All Arish Airport and the Rafah crossing as “essential arteries for lifesaving aid.”

But those arteries , he said, “are clogged. On one side of the border there are blocked humanitarian trucks as far as the eye can see , on the other, we have a real time humanitarian catastrophe stretching even further. “

The Secretary-General said, “the deadly assault on the human dignity of Palestinians is creating a crisis of credibility for the international community. It is challenging the values we proclaim is universal. It is challenging international law. It is challenging core humanitarian principles. It is challenging our basic humanity. “

Responding to a reporter’s question, he said, “we are not against anybody. We are in favour of principles and values; principles and values that are the UN Charter; principles and values that are in international law; principles and values that are in international humanitarian law; principles and values that have to do with the right of self-determination; and namely the right of the self-determination of the Palestinian people, and the right to exist - a Palestinian State.”
Later in the day, Guterres met with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, with whom he also discussed the situation in the Palestinian enclave.

Talking to a reporter, he said, “we are making all the pressure we can in order to obtain the humanitarian ceasefires, to allow to stop the bloodshed and to allow for humanitarian access to all people in Gaza that is starving. And we hope that the Security Council will be able next Monday to do so.”

The Security Council is expected to vote on another Gaza resolution on Monday.
