Storyline

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is currently on an official visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to discuss human rights, and to voice support for the country and its people.

Speaking on his first full day in the DRC, he highlighted how this huge country was one of the richest in natural resources, but these riches had brought little benefit to the population as a whole, because of violence and conflicts.

« C’est un des pays les plus riche du monde, mais on voit comment ces richesses ne sont malheureusement pas disponible à la population parce qu’il y a la violence. Tout d’abord voir les personnes déplacées à cause du conflit et de la violence et aussi en va voire les autorités et la société civile » said Türk, speaking in French.

One of the UN Human Rights Chief’s main aims is to raise awareness of the plight of civilians amid ongoing conflicts in the east of the country and identify ways to protect victims and prevent further violations.

On Tuesday (16 Apr), he paid a visit to a camp for internally displaced people near Bunia in Ituri province.

Those there had fled atrocities, seeing their villages attacked, their houses burned down, and people killed, one of the camp’s residents told the High Commissioner.
“I just met with a group of people who had been displaced as a result of horrible, violent massacres committed in their homes. And they have been here for the last four years. Their most fervent wish is to be able to go back,” Türk said.
There are some 1.8 million displaced people in Ituri. The total number for the DRC now stands at around 7.2 million.

Türk’s mission continues until Thursday. He is due to meet President Félix Tshisekedi and senior members of the Government. Also in Kinshasa, he will meet civil society representatives, the National Human Rights Commission, members of political parties and the diplomatic community.
