Storyline

Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua said, “Despite the significant progress, the world faces an infrastructure emergency.”

Addressing the opening of the informal dialogue on building global resilience and promoting sustainable development through infrastructure connectivity today (18 Apr) in New York, Junhua said, “More than 2 billion people across the globe lacked access to safely managed drinking water, and nearly half, neither improved the sanitation. Close to 700 million people across the globe have no access to electricity and about one third of the global population remains offline.”

He stated, “We can and we must turn the infrastructure emergency into an infrastructure opportunity. We must fill the gap with an eye to the future investing in infrastructure that it gets us closer to our sustainability goals.”

Dennis Francis, President of the General Assembly, said, “Persistent infrastructure gaps exacerbate global inequalities, disproportionately affecting countries in special situations, SIDS, LDCs and LLDCs – which are most vulnerable due to peculiar constraints and resource limitations.”

The President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, said, “Investing in high-quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure is a universal global priority.”

The informal dialogue aimed to generate momentum and raise ambition on proposals to contribute to enhancing investments in quality, reliable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure, including a risk-informed approach to infrastructure development and management.

It also aimed to create a platform to share best practices and strategies to enhance collaboration and partnerships within and between regions and regional and interregional challenges faced and to engage on means of implementation including innovative financing mechanisms and partnerships to support improved connectivity, resiliency, and quality of infrastructure systems.
