Storyline

Of the many stories in Dadaab refugee camp, one in particular captured the world’s attention.
Timothy Wachira remembers the first time he saw Aden.

SOUNDBITE,(English) Timothy Wachira, Nurse Nutritionalist Hagadera Stabilisation Centre (IRC) : “He was very wasted, he was very dehydrated and had complaints of vomiting diarrhea and a cough.”
“I remember when I took the history from the father I remember they had traveled from Somalia for 25 days. The sad thing is that the mother died along the way before they reached Hagadera Camp and it seemed to affect the father so much.”

Abdile and three year old Aden, arrived with his siblings, at Hagadera stabilization centre not a moment too soon.
SOUNDBITE,(English) Timothy Wachira, Nurse Nutritionalist Hagadera Stabilisation Centre (IRC) :
”At that time the situation was like 50/50.”

Abdile did not leave his son’s side for weeks. Willing him to live.

SOUNDBITE, Abdile Mohammed, Aden’s Father (Somali)
“I was there for 25 days, I experienced hardship. I was alone day and night. I didn’t even have clothes to cover him or support from family.”

A harrowing month later they were released and disappeared into the sea of tents in Dadaab.
It is estimated that more than 16,000 children in the camps are malnourished.

In the last month alone, UNICEF has provided therapeutic milk and food in Dadaab for more than 5,000 children just like Aden, working with partners like the International Rescue Committee in special stabilization centers.

We met up with Aden and his father again on the outskirts of Hagadera Camp.
A child walks towards his father, unrecognizable as Aden from 6 weeks ago.

We show him photos from his time in the hospital. A reminder of how far they have come.
Having come so far together, Aden does not like to be separated from his father - his lifeline.

And Abdile continues to have hopes for Aiden and his siblings - that soon his children will go to school, and perhaps one day they can carry him as he carried them.
