Thousands of people demonstrated in Juba the capital city of southern Sudan Tuesday, in support of Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement Interim Political Bureau's decision to suspend their participation in the Government of National Unity, because of what they describe as the National Congress Party's failure to fully implement crucial elements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
The protestors, who included school children and elders, walked for more than seven kilometers, gathering at the late John Garang's memorial. President of southern Sudan Salva Kiir, who is also Sudan's First Vice President, government officials and some southern Sudan government ministers attended the peaceful protests.
Monica Keji, one of the demonstrators said that Sudan need peace and was tired of war.
Awut Deng, Minister of Public Services said that the demonstration shows that the peace agreement belongs to Sudanese people.
A petition from the demonstrators was handed over to the president of southern Sudan, stating that all people of southern Sudan, stand firmly with their government (South Sudan) and was in absolute support of the leadership, and the unwavering determination and commitment to making sure that Comprehensive Agreement was implemented to the letter.
Meanwhile, Sudan's President Omar al Bashir met with Southern Sudanese former rebels in Khartoum, an indication that he was ready to resolve the current crisis between the SPLM and the Government of National Unity.
Speaking to journalists after a short meeting with President Bashir, the SPLM Vice Chairman, Riek Machar said the president would be meeting with First Vice-President Salva Kirr over the next few days.
He said President Bashir was also serious in resolving the issues which had been raised by the SPLM last week, when they suspended their participation in the Government of National Unity.
