Storyline

Argentina’s Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana visited the United Nations today to meet with the Secretary-General and talk about Argentina’s position on the Falklands Islands as the London-based Desire Petroleum began to explore for oil off the coast of the Islands.

Following the encounter with Ban Ki-moon, Taiana met journalists and said that the United Kingdoms act was one of a long chain of unilateral acts committed before.

He said it was a act that the clearly considered illegal and contrary to international law, and United Nations resolutions.

Taiana stressed that his government would defend their position with all the means that diplomacy and international law grants them.

Her also said that the Secretary-General was not happy to learn about the situation and that he would continue with his good offices.

Although Britain took control of the islands in 1833, Argentina has never given up its claims to them. The countries waged a war over the islands in 1982, after the military junta then governing Argentina invaded, with Britain emerging victorious.
