3. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, China:
“No matter what happens we need to stay committed to two directions. The first direction is to realize the denuclearization of the peninsula and uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime. The second direction is to uphold peace and stability on the Peninsula and not to allow chaos or war to breakout on the Peninsula. Therefore peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and negotiations represents the only right choice that is practical and viable.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, China:
“As a first step, or initial phase, of this dual track approach, China has also come up with the suspension for suspension proposal which is to ask the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to suspend its nuclear missile development activities and also ask the United State and the Republic of Korea to suspend their large scale military exercises against the DPRK; and by doing so we hope to address the most pressing concerns of the parties and also identify a place of breaking through to resume the peace talks. This proposal of the Chinese side is sensible and reasonable and is gaining the understanding and support from an increasingly big number of countries in the world.”

Storyline

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the situation on the Korean Peninsula was under grave tension and at a critical point calling for a “suspension for suspension” approach as a breakthrough for the resumption of peace talks.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (28 Apr), Wang said his country’s position on the situation was clear and consistent. He said the international community must stay committed to realizing the denuclearization of the peninsula and “not to allow chaos or war to breakout.” Wang stressed the peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and negotiations “represents the only right choice that is practical and viable.”

The Chinese Foreign Minister said his country proposed a dual-track approach by which paralleled progress would be made on two tracks, the denuclearization of the Peninsula and the establishment of a peace mechanism. He said the first step for this approach would be a “suspension for suspension proposal” which would require the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to suspend its nuclear missile development activities. Simultaneously, it would require the United States and the Republic of Korea to suspend their large scale military exercises “against the DPRK”. Wang said the Chinese proposal was “sensible and reasonable” and “gaining the understanding and support from an increasingly big number of countries in the world.”
