“People are arriving in desperate conditions. They are without water since days because they fled through the bush to cross the border; without food; they arrived really sick. We received in the last days a lot of wounded and injured people that are transported by helicopter as priority by the army. And they are immediately transferred to the hospital, where they are registration happens.”

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said some 20,563 refugees have now arrived in Angola, fleeing insecurity and violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kasai region since early April.
UNHCR said a steady stream of refugees continued to cross into Dundo in Lunda Norte Province with over 3,000 arriving in the past few days. The agency noted that the Angolan army was transporting the new arrivals from border points to the two receptions centres in Cacanda and Moussunge.
The recent arrivals included people with severe wounds and burn injuries, who have been transferred to a local hospital to receive urgent medical attention. UNHCR said refugee reception centres in Angola were already over-crowded and struggling to accommodate daily arrivals and it is currently assisting the Angolan authorities to identify a suitable site for the relocation of refugees from the temporary reception centres.
The agency pre-registered over 11,000 persons so far, 70 percent of whom are women and children and reported it was responding, in coordination with UNICEF, to an increasing number of unaccompanied and separated children.
UNHCR appealed for USD 6.5 million to provide immediate assistance to the refugees, including food, nutrition, health and relief items.
