“If the Trump administration truly wants to adopt a new policy towards the DPRK, drawing a lesson from the preceding administration’s failure, it should go for replacement of the Armistice Agreement between the DPRK and United States into a peace accord and total removal of the hostile relations so as to help ensure lasting peace of the Korean peninsula and furthermore global peace and security. If the United States persists in ant-DPRK sanctions without understanding its rival, the administration will have to take full responsibility for the ensuing catastrophic consequences.”

Storyline

An Ambassador from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) today (19 May) said that “if the Trump administration truly wants to adopt a new policy towards the DPRK” it should aim to renegotiate the Armistice Agreement.

Deputy Permanent Representative, Kim In Ryong, told reporters in New York that “if the United States persists in ant-DPRK sanctions without understanding its rival, the administration will have to take full responsibility for the ensuing catastrophic consequences.”

Ryong said the DPRK “categorically and totally rejects the United States and its vassal forces that called into question the DPRK’s bolstering nuclear deterrence for self-defence as the behaviour of undisguised encroachment and high-handed and outrageous interference in internal affairs against the DPRK, and condemn in strongest terms the UN Security Council which played to the tune of the United States again.”

On the US – South Korea joint military manoeuvres, the Ambassador said “there was no such critical moment like this has ever been experienced during past period of far over half century’s long history of confrontation between DPRK and the United States when the military provocative manoeuvres of the United States reached extreme aggressive and bellicose in its nature.”

Regarding the implementation of sanctions, he said “it is unspeakable for the Secretariat to argue about implementation of the sanction resolutions while not clarifying their legal basis. We are disappointed at the weakness of the Secretariat that could not make a decision even at the issue of organizing the international forum of legal experts to elucidate whether the resolutions are legally right or not.”

The DPRK reportedly fired a missile on Sunday from a base in the north-west DPRK, near the border with China.
