“It is essential that the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan agree on arrangements for border management that help them build a strong, peaceful relationship. Let us also remember that some key elements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement have not been completed. The citizens of Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States have not exercised their right to be heard in popular consultations.”

In Juba, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President of the General Assembly Joseph Deiss met with the President of South Sudan Salva Kiir, and assured him of the UN’s commitment to supporting the new nation’s state-building efforts.
The Secretary-General and President Kiir also discussed outstanding issues under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), including the border and the status of Abyei.
The Secretary-General stressed that peaceful relations between the North and the South would require strong leadership and vision.
At a press conference following his meeting with President Kiir, Ban told reporters “it is essential that the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan agree on arrangements for border management that help them build a strong, peaceful relationship.”
