Storyline

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, met today (19 Apr) in New York for the first AU-UN Annual Conference where they signed a Joint UN-AU Framework for Enhancing Partnership on Peace and Security.

Issues they discussed include the complementarity between Agenda 2030 and the AU’s Agenda 2063, countering terrorism, and financing for AU-lead operations, as well as some country-specific and regional situations - Libya, Mali, Central African Republic, Somalia, Boko Haram, among others.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “we share the vision that peace and security, inclusive and sustainable development and human rights and good governance are dimensions that are need to be seen together and that requires a common vision and enhanced cooperation between our two organizations.”

Talking about the changing conflict dynamics in Africa and elsewhere which includes “situations with asymmetric form of warfare” Secretary-General said “this forces us to strategically review the way we do peace operations and to fully explore the complementarity and interdependence of the African Union and the UN.”

Guterres also said “We will align the agenda 2063 of the African Union for the Sustainable Development with our own agenda 2030 and create the conditions not only to work together but also to have common lines of reporting and to be able to indeed avoid all forms of duplication and guarantee that we converge in the same objective to make the Agenda 2030 and the Agenda 2063 a success story in Africa.”
