Storyline

Hundreds of revellers on Sunday laughed away at jokes during a ‘Comedy for Peace’ event organized by the Free Voice NGO and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The show brought together people from different ethnic, cultural, political and ideological backgrounds under one roof, to share in the cultural and artistic heritage of South Sudan with many jokes poking fun at the state of the country and foreigners alike.

Well-known comedians in the country like Wokil, Fell Free, Ziko, Lotole, and Kon Kuol all spun out their best jokes to a receptive audience that did not seem to tire. Musician and Comedian Diu Lual Atent Lual said comedy was expanding in South Sudan and appreciated that UNMISS was taking advantage of this to communicate to audiences.

This ‘Comedy for Peace’, it is really a great job by UNMISS, and it is a very big contribution to South Sudan.”

UNMISS used the event to introduce its work the audience in an attempt to deliver a message of peace and unity in diversity. Comedian Toma said through such events, UNMISS could convey a message of peace to the people of South Sudan.

SOUNDBITE (English) Toma, Comedian
“This is a very good event. And when that happens every now and then you can send out messages of peace to the people because our country is in need of urgent peace. So, such events are very important. If UNMISS can do it in different towns, not only in Juba city, but other towns, so that the messages of peace can reach the society.”

UNMISS said another main purpose of this event was to create awareness about the role of the Mission in the country and help dispel misconceptions. The mission quizzed the audience on its mandate and activities in South Sudan and provided prizes for correct answers.
